We bought a house with the help of Joanie Schwartz.
I first met Joanie Schwartz at an open house in an old farmhouse I so wanted to buy. My partner and I had noticed this house several years before it was for sale. Every so often, we drove by imagining we might just see a ‘For Sale’ sign. In the meantime, we purchased about 7 acres of beautiful land in the same town and began the process of working with architects and builders to build our dream house on this property. Just as plans were completed, a builder chosen, the well dug and the driveway started, the economy tanked and the cost of building this house skyrocketed way beyond our budget. We were deeply disappointed, and, one day, decided to drive by the old farmhouse. Joanie’s sign was in the driveway and an open house underway. My partner and I explored the house and later met and had a conversation with Joanie. I was impressed with her knowledge of old buildings, assessment of the current real estate market, and her portrayal of the character of the town.
We decided to make an offer on the house. Joanie made it clear that she was a seller's agent but that she believed she could also fairly represent us—and that is the way it worked out. Throughout the process of negotiating the purchase price, I felt Joanie was honest with me and fair to the seller. The transaction felt equitable and the purchase price seemed fair enough.
Joanie was helpful and resourceful every step of the way. She connected us to a fabulous lawyer and the bank where we secured our mortgage. She also had references for contractors who could help us fix up this old farmhouse. Through our dealings with these people, it was clear that we weren’t the only ones in town that had a great deal of respect for Joanie Schwartz.
Because of our experience, we selected Joanie to represent us in selling the 7 acre property we were unable to develop. Selling this property was heartbreaking. We loved the land. We were afraid we were going to have to take a loss on it given the changes in the market since we’d purchased it. We were also afraid it wouldn’t sell in the current economy. Nevertheless, on a deep snow winter day, I walked the land with Joanie and commissioned her to sell it. She seemed to know how emotionally difficult this was for me. Within 90 days, Joanie had a buyer for the property at a price that allowed us to break even. The price was fair. In every interaction, she was proactive, professional, kind, and supportive.
If we ever need a real estate agent again, Joanie will be the one. She knows property. She knows people. She knows the market. She is realistic, equitable and fair. She works hard.
